He Held His Heart For His Chest Was Breaking

This Cantata (Bach Cantata 208: Schafe können sicher weiden), is one of my favourite Cantatas, and I always wanted to write my own lyric to it one day. Here it is. You should absolutely listen to the music while reading because the text follows the music to a T

Chorus:
He held his heart
For his chest was breaking
She held her head
Cause her skull was aching
Oh
What pains our troubled souls
To the point of  disbelief
Over the edge of killing grief
In an abyss of cold reprieve

Verse:
He held her tight,
of fear she would leave him
Sadness grabbed his guilt
With iron grip

(He held his heart
For his chest was breaking)
She held her head
Cause her skull was aching
Oh
What pains our troubled souls
In darkness
Oh
To the point of  disbelief

She held him tight, to dance with him
A waltz of loss
He kissed her hair
For his heart was breaking
She held tight for she was aching
A dance of losing love

Chorus:
          He held his heart
          For his chest was breaking
          She held her head
          Cause her skull was aching
          Oh
          What pains our troubled souls
          To the point of  disbelief
Over the edge of killing grief
In an abyss of cold reprieve

Bridge:
"Let go
Let go, oh, my lovely
For it is time to grant me my freedom
to choose my life in my own selfish way"

Chorus:
          He held his heart
          For his chest was breaking
          She held her head
          Cause her skull was aching
          Oh
          What pains our troubled souls
          To the point of  disbelief
Over the edge of killing grief
In an abyss of cold reprieve

Verse:
"I love you, I do
But life is a cruel fiend
Please be my friend
Though I cannot be here
But love someone else
I will hold you so dear
I love a man, you love me
How cruel
Please find someone to give
What you need most

You!
My wife, my companion,
For life
So they said...
They say so much
I hurt everything in you
I love you so"

He held her tight,
of fear she would leave him
Sadness grabbed his guilt
With iron grip

He held his heart
For his chest was breaking
(She held her head
Cause her skull was aching)
Oh
What pains our troubled souls
In darkness
Oh
To the point of  disbelief

She held him tight, to dance with him
A waltz of loss
He kissed her hair
For his heart was breaking
She held tight for she was aching
A dance of losing love

Chorus:
          He held his heart
          For his chest was breaking
          She held her head
          Cause her skull was aching
          Oh
          What pains our troubled souls
          To the point of  disbelief
Over the edge of killing grief
In an abyss of cold reprieve

    1. Thank you, that means a lot to me, I spent so much time writing this :) Tell me, you are not coming back to your blog to write poetry?

    2. not this year at least because I am still a beginner and after posting for a while I thought I wasn't really great at poetry so I will practice more, get better, and start again probably the next year.

    1. Thank you Budgie, I am so happy you like it. This was so much work, and I am so doubtful how it will be received. Not many people take the time to listen and read, I see that on Soup. Sometimes they read poems that I think are mediocre, and they are tumbling all over each other with praise. And sometimes I write something like this, and hardly get any response. It's so strange....

  3. Dear Darren, This poem brought tears to my eyes... it is truly a gem. I relly liked the music too. And, as far as the soup is concerned, I agree with you totally. However, I trudge on and comment on only poems I really like. It's an exchange really. When someone reads and comments on one of mine, I return the favor.

    1. Carole, thank you. I am completely fine with commenting or not. It's a personal thing, and I am never insulted if people don't like my poem, I don't like everything either :)
